# "AI brain rot" and cognitive offloading: research in plain words

Studies on what happens to effort, reasoning and memory when an AI does part of the thinking. Lower effort is not always a problem, but these studies show when it costs learning.

## Summaries (4)

### [With AI, people scored better on reasoning puzzles but overestimated how well they did](/papers/fernandes-2026-ai-makes-you-smarter-but-none-the-wiser/)

Daniela Fernandes et al. (2026) · Two online experiments · Peer-reviewed

People who used AI to solve logical reasoning problems from the LSAT scored a little better than a norm group but overestimated their own score by even more. People with higher AI literacy were more confident and less accurate about how they had done.

### [Unrestricted ChatGPT help raised practice scores but lowered exam scores](/papers/bastani-2025-generative-ai-without-guardrails-harms-learning/)

Hamsa Bastani et al. (2025) · Preregistered randomized controlled trial (field experiment) · Peer-reviewed

In a high school in Turkey, students who practised maths with a plain ChatGPT-style GPT-4 assistant did much better during practice, then scored 17% lower than students without AI when they sat a test on their own. A second version with teacher-written prompts that gave hints instead of solutions avoided that drop, but did not beat the no-AI group on the test either.

### ["Your Brain on ChatGPT": what the MIT essay-writing study did and didn't show](/papers/kosmyna-2025-your-brain-on-chatgpt-cognitive-debt/)

Nataliya Kosmyna et al. (2025) · Lab experiment with EEG · Preprint (not peer-reviewed at the time of summary)

People who wrote essays with ChatGPT showed the weakest brain connectivity on EEG, felt the least ownership of their essays and often couldn't quote what they had just written, compared with people using a search engine or no tools. It is one of the most-shared "AI brain rot" studies, but it is a small, unreviewed lab study about essay writing, not proof of lasting brain damage.

### [ChatGPT made research feel easier but students' reasoning was weaker than with Google](/papers/stadler-2024-cognitive-ease-at-a-cost-llm-vs-search/)

Matthias Stadler et al. (2024) · Randomized experiment · Peer-reviewed

University students who researched a science question with ChatGPT felt less mental effort than students who used Google, but wrote recommendations with lower-quality reasoning and justification. Their answers were not more uniform than the Google group's.

Each summary says what the researchers did, who took part, what they found, the limitations, and whether we read the full paper or only the abstract.
