Supervised AI tutoring matched human tutors in UK maths classrooms

In short: In five UK secondary schools, pupils who got chat tutoring drafted by Google's LearnLM model, with every message checked by an expert tutor, did at least as well as pupils tutored by humans alone, and were 5.5 percentage points more likely to solve new problems on later topics. Tutors approved most AI drafts with little or no editing.

Summarized

What they did

Over seven weeks (May–June 2025), pupils were randomly assigned either to static hints (a pre-written message about the likely misconception when they got a question wrong) or to live chat tutoring. Within the tutoring group, each session was randomly given to a human tutor alone or to LearnLM, a model fine-tuned for teaching, whose every message a human tutor approved, edited or rewrote before it was sent. Pupils could not see which kind of session they had.

Who took part

165 pupils in Years 9 and 10 (ages 13–15) at five UK secondary schools using the Eedi maths platform: 91 in the static-hint group and 74 in the tutoring group.

What they found

Effect size: +5.5 percentage points on novel problems (66.2% vs 60.7%) for LearnLM-supported versus human-only sessions.
